Former Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford received a prison sentence of fifteen years on Friday in a bribery case.
The 63 year old former mayor was also penalized for $360,000 after being convicted in about 60 felony counts in the month of October last year. The former mayor of the city of Birmingham was convicted for taking bribe of about of $265,000 in return of profitable bond work.
The verdict was given out on Friday by U.S. District Judge Scott Coogler, who sentenced the former mayor for accepting loan payments, clothes, Rolex watches as well as cash amount to the tune of $240,000, which is said to have influenced his decision about bond work. The prison sentence that was delivered to Larry Langford was about nine years lesser than what was demanded by the prosecutors who had urged the federal judge to sentence the former mayor to 24 years. The main reason which was furnished by the prosecutors for demanding more than two decades in prison for Larry Langford was that the convict did not show any kind of remorse for the corruption that he had indulged in.
However, the defense attorney had asked for a prison sentence for just five years for the former Birmingham mayor and following the court hearing, they are reportedly already working for an appeal in the case. After he was sent to prison for fifteen years, Larry Langford reportedly apologized to the court for the crime committed by him. After being taken into custody for corruption charges on December 2008, Larry Langford was removed from the office following his conviction on 60 counts.
